This release is different from the public beta version. With the new iOS update, Apple is now giving users the ability to unlock their smartphone with FaceID even with their masks on. The iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 come with Universal Control feature that was announced at the WWDC last year. The feature was expected to be rolled out in October last year when the macOS Monterey was released but will now be a part of the upcoming macOS 12.3 update. Notably, the company recently rolled out the iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3 versions for its devices. While the update didn't offer any new features, it fixed some critical bugs including the widely publicised Safari 15 bug that had users concerned about their privacy online.
Its predecessor, the iOS and iPadOS 15.2.1 was rolled out a couple of weeks ago.
Besides the 'Face ID unlock with mask' feature, the new iOS update also tags along with a feature that will let users copy text from objects using the camera inside the Notes and Reminder apps.
Additionally, it brings along some new emojis like biting lip, pregnant man, heart hands and a few others.
Setting up the new feature
For new devices, users will be able to access the service just like they did earlier while setting up the phone, without wearing their masks during the process.
Those downloading the new update on an existing device can enable the 'Use Face ID With a Mask' toggle by tapping on Settings>Face ID and Passcode
Face ID unlock with mask
Though Face ID is accessible from models as far back as iPhone X, the new feature will only be available in models starting from the iPhone 12.
The feature is an upgrade from the existing facial recognition technology and serves right in the pandemic era where most people find it uncomfortable taking their masks off every time they need to unlock their iPhones.
it eliminates the need to take off the mask by "recognising the unique features around the eye".
